Bringing Japanese Tradition to Life in the UK
Introduction
Kimono & Flowers was established from a deep appreciation for Japanese culture and a desire to share its beauty and traditions with a wider audience. Our journey began with a unique musical performance and has since evolved into a dedicated service offering authentic Japanese kimonos, props, and cultural experiences across the UK.
Our Story
From a Musical Tribute to a Cultural Endeavour
In 2009, to commemorate our 25th wedding anniversary, my husband Michael and I collaborated with composer Ian to create the “Kuroda Musical,” celebrating the legacy of the Kuroda clan from southern Japan. With support from the Japanese Embassy in London, the performance was held at the Lansdowne Club in Berkeley Square as part of the 150th anniversary of the UK-Japan Trade and Amity Agreement.
For this event, I sourced authentic Japanese kimonos, including a genuine kamishimo from the Edo period, to dress our soloists. Post-performance, it felt disheartening to store these beautiful garments and props away. To preserve and share them, I uploaded photographs to our original website, www.kuroda.co.uk. This initiative sparked interest from individuals seeking Japanese attire and props for various occasions, leading to the inception of Kimono & Flowers.
